George Wells, Ph.D., est directeur et chercheur principal du Centre de méthodes de recherche en cardiologie, à l’Institut de cardiologie de l’Université d’Ottawa (ICUO). Il est aussi professeur à l’École d’épidémiologie, et de santé publique et au Département de médecine, de l’Université d’Ottawa. Enfin, il est scientifique principal affilié à l’Institut de recherche de l’Hôpital d’Ottawa.

Parcours

Le professeur Wells a travaillé intensément avec des organismes de recherche gouvernementaux et non gouvernementaux ainsi qu’avec des entreprises privées des secteurs de la pharmacologie et de la biotechnologie. Il a siégé au comité de direction de plusieurs programmes de recherche nationaux et internationaux, en plus de participer à des comités de contrôle externe de l’efficacité et de l’innocuité, à des comités d’examen des subventions scientifiques, à des comités de rédaction ainsi qu’à des comités consultatifs scientifiques. Il est actuellement rédacteur en chef adjoint du Journal of Clinical Epidemiologyet membre du comité de rédaction du Journal de l’Association médicale canadienne.

Le professeur Wells a reçu le Prix d’excellence en recherche de l’Université d’Ottawa en 2014 et le Prix du scientifique de renommée de la Société canadienne de recherches cliniques (SCRC) en 2007.

Le professeur Wells est l’auteur ou le coauteur de plus de 1035 articles publiés et de 1060 résumés scientifiques. Il a participé, à titre de chercheur principal ou de collaborateur, à plus de 310 projets de recherche soutenus par des subventions dépassant les 200 millions de dollars. Il a également fait de nombreuses présentations scientifiques lors de rencontres nationales et internationales. Il a enseigné à l’université au premier cycle et aux cycles supérieurs durant plus de 35 ans, et il a dirigé ou codirigé les thèses de plus de 100 étudiants de maîtrise ou de doctorat.

Intérêts cliniques et de recherche

En matière de recherche, ses champs d’intérêt portent sur les sujets suivants : conception et analyse d’essais cliniques; méthodologie statistique concernant les processus de maladie et la prestation des soins de santé; essais systématiques et méta-analyse; évaluations économiques; développement et évaluation des technologies d’aide à la décision pour les patients et les praticiens.
