Awards and Recognition at CCC 2016

Ottawa Heart Institute staff and trainees featured prominently among award recipients again this year at the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress, with awards from several differ professional societies.

Chan, Kwan-Leung
Distinguished Teacher Award, Canadian Cardiovascular Society

Kwan-Leung Chan, MD

A cardiologist with extensive expertise in echocardiography, Dr. Chan is widely recognized as an outstanding educator. 

Annual Achievement Award, Canadian Society of Echocardiography

Ian Burwash, MD

Another highly regarded cardiologist and educator, Dr. Burwash was recognized for his contributions to echocardiography.

Annual Achievement Award, Canadian Society of Cardiovascular Nuclear and CT Imaging

Terrence Ruddy, MD

Director of Nuclear Cardiology and a former Division Head of Cardiology at the Heart Institute, Dr. Ruddy was honoured for his important contributions to the field of nuclear imaging.

Excellence in Cardiac Critical Care Research Award, Canadian Cardiovascular Critical Care Society

Juan Russo, MD

Dr. Russo, a cardiology resident, won the CANCARE award for his abstract “Impact of Mean Arterial Pressure on Clinical Outcomes in Comatose Survivors of Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest,” one of five he presented at CCC 2016.

Dr. Paul Cartier Cardiac Surgery Resident Award, Canadian Society of Cardiac Surgeons

Hadi Toeg, MD

Dr. Toeg, Chief Resident for Cardiac Surgery, received the award for demonstrating promise for a distinguished academic career as a cardiac surgeon.

Finalist, Trainee Research Award Final – Clinical Science, Canadian Cardiovascular Society

Fernanda Erthal, MD

A post-doctoral fellow, Dr. Erthal’s abstract “Assessment of Cardiac Allograft Vasculopathy Using Rubidium-82 Cardiac Positron Emission Tomography” placed her as a finalist for the CCS research award.
