The latest global ranking of research organizations from Scimago Institutions Rankings (SIR) recognizes the continued excellence and vitality of research at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, placing it 159th out of 4,851 institutions worldwide, across all fields of study. In Canada, the Institute placed fourth out of the 103 Canadian organizations included in the ranking and was the top cardiac centre.
In the 2014 SIR Normalized Impact Report, the Heart Institute jumped more than 20 positions in the global ranking despite a significant increase in the number of institutions rated. The Normalized Impact Report measures an institution’s global research impact independent of its size.
“These remarkable results, although very impressive, are not surprising, as our thriving research teams are driven by the power of discovery and work relentlessly in bringing the latest innovations in cardiovascular research to the bedside,” said Peter Liu, MD, Chief Scientific Officer at the Heart Institute. “Ottawa is well on the road to becoming among the top international research hubs in cutting-edge heart research.”
The best patient care is achievable only when it is supported by vibrant basic and clinical research, and this approach is central to care at the Heart Institute, "Today's research is tomorrow's treatment,” said Thierry Mesana, MD, PhD, President and CEO of the Heart Institute. “As an established academic health centre, our success is achievable because of the synergy in which care, research and education come together under one roof. This integrated model of care is the best for our patients and their families."
