Summary

The incumbent is responsible for providing statistical expertise for designing, implementing and analyzing clinical trials, observational studies and surveys in the healthcare field and expertise in conducting statistical analyses including survival analysis, model fitting and statistical testing for papers submitted to medical journals at the Ottawa Heart Institute Research Corporation (OHIRC). The Biostatistician provides educational programs on biostatistics for the staff of the OHIRC and participates in the programs of the University of Ottawa School of Epidemiology and Public Health.

Key accountabilities

  • Provide statistical expertise for designing, implementing and analyzing clinical trials, observational studies and surveys in the health care field in accordance with recognized professional guidelines for statisticians.
  • Provide statistical expertise for conducting statistical analyses including modeling and statistical testing for papers submitted to medical journals.
  • Develop educational programs on biostatistics and statistical software for the staff of the OHIRC and participate in the programs of the University of Ottawa School of Epidemiology and Public Health.
  • To encourage, develop, identify issues and provide recommendations for plans of action addressing statistical methods and clinical practices in the research at the OHIRC.
  • Ensure that statistical design, data collection, analysis, and reporting are performed with the utmost rigour.
  • Participate in the recruitment and management of the human resources within the CRMC
  • Maintain an overview of the direction of research at the HI as it may relate to the work of the CRMC.

Qualifications

  • Master of Biostatistics or equivalent.
  • Minimum of three years experience in the medical/health research field.

Skills and abilities

  • Extensive experience in the medical/health research field
  • Proven ability to manage and analyze large data sets
  • Excellent leadership and management qualities
  • Excellent organizational, analytical and decision making skills
  • Experience in designing and making public presentations
  • Extensive knowledge SAS and other statistical software
  • Good knowledge of computers (word processing, spreadsheets, presentations)
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
