Description

The role works as part of the Research Services team to deliver on strategic research priorities. A key responsibility is to contribute to ensuring the highest quality of the Institute’s research activities. The portfolio includes managing and further developing the Patient Engagement in Research initiative to support the Institute’s research enterprise. The role is also responsible for other research quality initiatives such as the Scientist Performance Review process, the research recognition portfolio and the research impact metrics. The incumbent will work closely with, and assist, Institute researchers, trainees and research staff and will interact with the wider cardiovascular research community in Ottawa and beyond.

Responsibilities will include

  • Manage the Patient Engagement in Research portfolio including:
  • Manage the active recruitment of patient partners for research projects.
  • Act as a liaison between patient partners and research projects.
  • Assist researchers to include patient engagement elements in grant applications.
  • Train and Recruit Patient Partner Champions.
  • Develop patient engagement resources; deliver education sessions for researchers and the research community (create a culture change to improve patient engagement in research).
  • Coordinate Patient Engagement activities with other entities/organizations across Canada.
  • Maintain/Update the Patient Partner Database.
  • Develop and manage the evaluation of the Patient Engagement in Research initiative at the Institute.
  • Serve as the research liaison on the UOHI Patient Partnership (UPP) Council.
  • Keep abreast of best practices in patient engagement and develop partnerships with external stakeholders to improve patient engagement.
  • Stay informed on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) for integration of EDI into patient engagement practices.
  • Coordinate the Scientist Performance Review process.
  • Manage the research recognition portfolio including coordinating the Research Award Calls for Nominations, adjudication, award presentations and award profiles process.
  • Track research impact metrics and contribute to the development of new/non-traditional metrics to monitor research progress/success.
  • Provide support for the scientist appointment/contract process including Affiliate Researcher appointments and Facility User access process.

Qualifications

  • Experience in providing support for patient engagement in research.
  • A minimum of 4-5 years experience in an administrative support role, ideally in a research or clinical environment.
  • Highly motivated and creative to meet the challenges within a fast paced and busy environment.
  • High level of resourcefulness to function effectively with minimal supervision; ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Exceptional ability to communicate: prompt, friendly, approachable and appropriate use of communication media given the situation.
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to prioritize.
  • Ability to handle high pressure situations and meet strict deadlines.
  • Excellent general office and organizational skills.

We are a close-knit team highly motivated to provide effective, quality support to our Institute researchers, staff, and trainees. We work closely with the VP, Research and senior management to implement the strategic plan for research and drive multiple initiatives to increase the impact of our research. As well as grants facilitation and management, our team is heavily involved in many aspects of the research strategy and operations including facilitation to Innovation Hubs of multidisciplinary teams, internal funding competitions, secretariat to standing advisory committees, oversight of research core facilities and common equipment, support to trainees, communications to the research community, and event planning.
