Overview
The Inherited Arrhythmia Clinic provides expertise in the diagnosis and management of inherited cardiac conditions. Services include expert clinical evaluation, cardiac testing, genetic counselling and genetic testing. The goal of the clinic is to accurately identify hereditary heart conditions and offer education, surveillance and medical management. Specialized care for these conditions is aimed at preventing tragic cardiac events by ensuring adequate patient education and management.
Inherited arrhythmia conditions can be diagnosed at any age and have a wide range of severity from no symptoms to sudden cardiac death. The most common inherited arrhythmia conditions include:
- Long QT syndrome
- Brugada syndrome
- Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy
- Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy
Who is evaluated in the Inherited Arrhythmia Clinic
- Survivor of cardiac arrest not secondary to coronary blockages
- First-degree relatives of a victim of unexplained sudden cardiac death
- Individuals with passing-out spells that occur in combination with an abnormal ECG
- Individuals with loss of consciousness during exercise or physical activity
- Individuals with an uncertain diagnosis of an inherited cardiac arrhythmia
The clinic is staffed by two arrhythmia specialists with an expertise in the diagnosis and management of inherited cardiac disorders. Additional staff include a full-time genetic counsellor for patient education and immediate contact.
Referring Patients
Referrals are accepted from physicians. All new referrals for patient evaluation will be seen within 8 to12 weeks. Helpful background information includes: patient demographics, medical history/reason for referral, test reports (echo, treadmill, ECGs).
