The University of Ottawa Heart Institute congratulates Dr. Katey Rayner on her nomination to the incoming class of the Royal Society of Canada’s (RSC) College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists, which recognizes emerging Canadian research leaders. The announcement was made earlier today by the RSC.
The RSC’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists is Canada’s first national system of multidisciplinary recognition for the emerging generation of Canadian intellectual leadership. Its members are selected based on a demonstrated high level of achievement at an early career stage.
Dr. Rayner is a scientist and director of the Cardiometabolic microRNA Laboratory at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. She is also an associate professor in the Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology & Immunology at the University of Ottawa.
Dr. Rayner’s research focuses on underlying causes of heart disease, such as vascular inflammation, reaching beyond typical risk factors like cholesterol or high blood pressure. Her team is also working on uncovering new genes that might cause heart disease and is investigating how micro ribonucleic acids might be used as therapeutics to treat cardiometabolic diseases in the future.
"This is truly an honour,” said Dr. Rayner of her nomination to the class of 2019. “I am excited to continue looking at the diverse mechanisms that contribute to heart disease. I look forward to participating in the Royal Society of Canada's activities in promoting excellence and scholarship across the country."
