Dr. Emilio Alarcon has been awarded an Early Researcher Award by the Ontario Ministry of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade. Dr. Alarcon will receive funding in the amount of $190,000 over 5 years for his project titled Bio-inspired functional nanomaterials for tissue engineering.
The funded project aims to develop a novel array of functional materials for treating injury following a heart attack, non-healing wounds and chronically infected corneas. These innovative materials will have the potential to help improve the quality of life for hundreds of thousands of Ontarians as well as saving billions of dollars for the health care system.
Dr. Emilio Alarcon is the director of the Bio-nanomaterials Chemistry and Engineering Laboratory at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. He is also an assistant professor in the Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine.
