Two University of Ottawa Heart Institute researchers will receive important funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) for their projects addressing the wider health implications of COVID-19.
- Peter Liu, MD, the institute’s chief scientific officer and vice-president of research, will receive $498,210 over two years for his project investigating the virus’ impact and the risk and resilience in Chinese, South Asian and Black populations.
- Louise Sun, MD, a cardiac anesthesiologist, and director of Team Soleil, will receive $500,000 over the same period for her systematic implementation and impact evaluation of data-driven cardiac surgery triaging tools to optimize operational efficiency and enhance patient outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.
As a co-principal investigator, Sun will also contribute to a study into the indirect impact of COVID-19 on cardiac function and associated outcomes in patients awaiting cardiac surgery, an opportunity to inform data-driven surgical wait list management. Wilton van Klei, MD, PhD, of University Health Network, is the project’s nominated principal investigator.
