Together, research activity at The Ottawa Hospital and the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI) totalled $150 million in 2020-21, up from $145M the previous year. With their results being combined, this places The Ottawa Hospital and UOHI in fourth spot among comparable hospitals in Canada for research activity, or sixth spot when provincial health authorities are included. This data was released today by Research Infosource.

Through research, we discover new solutions to our patients’ heart conditions and related areas of health. Notable research successes from The Ottawa Hospital and the UOHI from the last year include:
- Development and manufacturing of an innovative kind of cancer immunotherapy, with promising clinical trial results.
- Advancing research on stem cells and their extracellular vesicles for the prevention of lung and brain conditions in extremely premature babies.
- Setting a new standard for the treatment of latent tuberculosis in Canada, using a transformational new drug.
- A significant discovery in autophagy research that paves the way for new approaches to treat atherosclerosis.
Over the last three years, The Ottawa Hospital, together with the UOHI, has also ranked fourth among more than 600 hospitals in Canada for competitive, peer-reviewed funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.
