Dr. Rob Beanlands to become Heart Institute’s next president and chief executive officer

Five-year mandate set to begin April 1, 2024.

OTTAWA, January 18, 2024 — The University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI) is proud to announce that renowned cardiologist and clinician-scientist, Dr. Rob Beanlands, has been appointed as its next president and chief executive officer. Dr. Beanlands is the current deputy director general and former head of cardiology at the UOHI. He will become the fourth president and CEO in the institute’s history, succeeding Dr. Thierry Mesana. Dr. Beanlands’ mandate will begin April 1, 2024.

“It is my honour to extend a very warm welcome to Dr. Rob Beanlands as our incoming president and chief executive officer,” said Dalton McGuinty, chair of the UOHI’s board of directors. “Dr. Beanlands, recognized internationally as a leader in cardiovascular imaging, is a longtime member of the UOHI family, respected by his colleagues, patients, and our community. I congratulate Dr. Thierry Mesana for his outstanding leadership and thank him for his invaluable contribution to the institute’s success and growth over the last decade.”

Dr. Beanlands graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa. He completed his residency in internal medicine and cardiology at the University of Toronto. He then undertook a clinical research fellowship at the University of Michigan in the United States.

Dr. Beanlands joined the UOHI as a staff cardiologist in 1992. At the Heart Institute, he is the founding director of the National Cardiac PET Centre, the first positron-emission tomography facility in Canada dedicated to cardiovascular disease. Dr. Beanlands is celebrated as one of the top cardiovascular imaging clinician-scientists in his field worldwide.

At the University of Ottawa, Dr. Beanlands is a professor in the Division of Cardiology in the Department of Medicine, with cross-appointments in the Departments of Radiology and Cellular and Molecular Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine. His research on the heart’s metabolism, flow, inflammation and cellular function has led to pioneering translational work that has impacted the understanding of disease mechanisms, advances in patient care, health policy and clinical practice guidelines.
