In terms of clinical care, the University of Ottawa Heart Institute is the sole, independent provider of specialized cardiovascular care for the Champlain Region and serves more than 40 referral hospitals throughout the province.
Because of its unique nature under Ontario law, the Heart Institute is technically not recognized as a public hospital. In accordance with the University of Ottawa Heart Institute Act, 2000, patients of the Institute are recognized as patients of The Ottawa Hospital for purposes of Ontario's Public Hospitals Act.
Through a contractual agreement, The Ottawa Hospital provides the Heart Institute with a variety of medical and administrative support services, such as medical and non-medical personnel, financial and purchasing assistance, health records, information technology support, and housekeeping. As well, many of the Institute's research staff have teaching cross-appointments and collaborate on programs such as the hospital's Organ and Tissue Donation Program and Weight Management Clinic.
In terms of research and education, the Institute enjoys a close working relationship with the University of Ottawa. Our academic requirements are to educate and train undergraduates, graduates, and postgraduates in an environment that mandates a vigorous pursuit of research. As a cardiovascular centre of excellence, we provide the academic teaching, training, and research required by the University.
The Ottawa Hospital
The Ottawa Hospital (TOH) is a multi-campus academic health sciences centre, serving 1.5 million residents of Ottawa and Eastern Ontario, both in English and French. A compassionate provider of patient-centred health services, TOH emphasizes tertiary-level and specialty care. It provides a wide variety of educational opportunities across all health care disciplines in partnership with the University of Ottawa and other affiliated universities, community colleges, and training organizations.
The Ottawa Hospital develops, shares, and applies new knowledge and technology in the delivery of patient care through nationally and internationally recognized research programs in partnership with the Ottawa Health Research Institute (OHRI).
TOH plays an active role in promoting and improving health within our community. The Ottawa Hospital collaborates with a wide range of partners to address the needs of the community and to build a strong, integrated system for regional health care delivery.
Striving to meet the needs of the culturally diverse community we serve, TOH functions in English and French.
