Dr. Labrosse is a Research Associate in the Division of Cardiac Surgery at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute and an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Ottawa. He currently serves as interim Vice-Dean, Graduate Studies, in the Faculty of Engineering. He previously served as Associate Chair, Undergraduate Studies, for the Biomedical Mechanical Engineering program in the Faculty of Engineering from 2011 till 2014, and as Director of the Ottawa-Carleton Institute for Biomedical Engineering from 2009 till 2012.

Background

Dr. Labrosse received a Diplôme d’Ingénieur from the École Centrale de Nantes, France, in 1993, with a specialization in structural engineering. He obtained a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the same institution in 1998 and pursued his research work in the USA on the finite element modelling of wire ropes and cord-rubber materials during a post-doc at the University of Akron in Ohio. He then spent five years with the Heineman Medical Research Laboratory at the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, working on problems in cardiovascular mechanics related to clinical topics, with Drs. Robicsek and Thubrikar.

Dr. Labrosse joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Ottawa in 2005 and was tenured in 2008. He teaches mechanical and biomedical engineering at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Research and clinical interests

Dr. Labrosse’s research interests revolve around theoretical and computational structural analysis and its applications to the diagnosis and surgical treatment of cardiovascular diseases. The clinically oriented aspects of his research include computational simulations of native and prosthetic aortic and mitral valves, and stress analysis of the aorta in different pathologies. Collaborators include the University of Heidelberg in Germany, Concordia University on Montreal, and the Food and Drug Administration in the USA. The work is funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and the Ontario Centres for Excellence.
