Clinical Associate Cardiac Surgeon

Coordinator, Heart Valve Follow-up Clinic (Ontario Telemedicine Network)

University of Ottawa Heart Institute

Dr. Harry Lapierre is Clinical Associate Cardiac Surgeon and Coordinator of the Heart Valve Follow-up Clinic (Ontario Telemedicine Network) at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.

Background

Dr. Lapierre obtained his BSc in Microbiology from the Université de Montréal in 1989, followed by his MD in 1994 and residencies and fellowships at the following affiliated hospitals: Université de Montréal, McGill University in Montreal, and the University of Toronto.

During his Fellowship in Toronto, he performed over 650 open-heart cases representing the full spectrum of adult cardiac surgery care (coronary bypasses on- and off-pump, mitral valve operations including repair, aortic valve replacements, diseases of the aorta, pacemakers, and implantable cardioverter defibrillators).

He is involved in the Heart Institute's program for minimally invasive surgery for stand-alone atrial fibrillation ablation. Approximately 20 surgeries have been performed with a success rate of about 80 percent. As Valve Clinic Coordinator, he ensures that all patients with valve prostheses are followed and treated according to the latest guidelines, and that patients with prosthesis dysfunction are promptly referred back for treatment. His feedback to community doctors helps to update them in the management of patients with native and prosthesis valve pathologies.

Also, Dr. Lapierre trains surgical assistants (three MDs) and tutors two nurses as part of the RFNA program.

Research and clinical interests

Dr. Lapierre and Dr. Marc Ruel developed the first world series of  minimally invasive cardiac surgical coronary artery bypass grafting (MICS CABG) operations, in which all territories of the heart can be bypassed non-invasively via a 5-7 cm left thoracotomy approach, without use of the heart-lung machine.

Dr. Lapierre's other interests are heart transplantation and devices for heart failure (Heartmate II, Thoratec, Impella RD, LD and LP).
