Ahmed, Zeeshan

Dr. Zeeshan Ahmed is an interventional cardiologist at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI) and an assistant professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa.

Background

Dr. Ahmed graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Ottawa and subsequently earned his medical degree from McMaster University. He completed residencies in internal medicine and cardiology at McMaster University, followed by a fellowship in interventional cardiology during which he also served as a clinical scholar at the Hamilton General Hospital. Thereafter, he completed a second interventional cardiology fellowship at the UOHI with focused training in intravascular imaging, coronary physiology, and chronic total occlusion percutaneous coronary intervention Concurrent to his interventional cardiology fellowships, he completed a Masters in health professions education from Maastricht University in the Netherlands where he studied entrustment decision-making by senior near-peer and faculty assessors in postgraduate medical education.

Dr. Ahmed has been recognized for his contributions to medical education and patient care with the Dr. Brian Steele Award for Patient Advocacy, the McMaster University Internal Medicine Chief Resident Award, the Clerkship Medical Selective Resident Teaching Award, the Dr. Jeff Ginsberg Subspeciality Resident Award, the Hamilton Academy of Medicine Resident Award, the Professional Association of Residents of Ontario Award for Resident Leaders and Teachers, and the Dr. Michael Rokoss Award for Clinical Teaching in Cardiology Residency Training.

After completing his clinical training in 2022, he worked as a staff interventional cardiologist at the Toronto East General Hospital and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto. Dr. Ahmed joined the Division of Cardiology at the UOHI in 2024.

Research and clinical interests

His academic interests include curriculum design, assessment practices in post-graduate medical education, procedural skills education in cardiology, and bedside clinical teaching. In addition to continuing his existing research work on entrustment decision-making in postgraduate medical education, Dr. Ahmed plans to focus on the design and assessment of novel procedural skills curricula in cardiology and intravascular imaging/coronary physiology education in interventional cardiology training.
